FINAL ROUND

Finally we are done! After the series of colloquia, I could say that I personally learned a lot of things. It’s really a great experience for all of us not only for me. Inviting different people from different fields as speakers is really a hard job I’m happy that we surpassed all the colloquia with a learning experience. It helped me gained a lot of knowledge not only about our course but also in different fields that we haven’t exposed with. The topic that I and Archie chose was medicine; it really took us time to convince guests because medicine practitioners are really busy in the hospital but thanks our beloved guest Mrs. Michelle Valevieso for accepting our invitation and humbly imparting us knowledge about her profession. I also learned something from the field of health and beauty, literature, campus journalism, media and politics, fashion and entertainment, business, philosophy education, sports, and military.
We have also learned how to make the colloquium possible despite of the shortcomings; It’s just like in production, I must confess that before I thought that conducting colloquium is not as fun as in production but I was wrong because we also enjoyed producing series of colloquium..
Allow me to take this chance to thank our dearest teacher Mrs. Virginia Bautista for always making us active and helping us develop our hidden skills and talents that we may use in our future careers . Although we keep on complaining among our teachers she’s only the one who always gives us challenges and exposures but in the end we realized that challenges are more helpful than just sitting pretty inside the classroom and not learning anything. My parents are really proud of me now; they admit that they were wrong when they said that I’ve chosen a wrong course. But look at them now they support me in all times.
The series of colloquium were indeed successful. But I jut like to comment on the venue. I suggest if there will be colloquium next year, students should be given enough time and preparation to avoid shortcomings.
Some colloquium also turned out to be so boring I think it would be better if the colloquium will be done in a lively manner not just a question and answer portion thing… And its best if there are many audiences that will also participate in the discussion so the invited speakers will be inspired in talking not just the class.

Here's something to touch our hearts

I would like to share to all my readers this poem. I received this in my email from my boyfriend's Dad. I like this poem and I hope it will also touch your heart and encourage you to love your parents more and respect them for they are the reason why we are here.

Here's something to touch our hearts...
Huwag mo sana akong pagtatawanan o pagsasawaang pakinggan.
Amoy matanda, amoy lupa. Huwag mo sana akong piliting maligo.
Mahina na ang katawan ko.
Madaling magkasakit kapag nalamigan,
Pinagtyagaan kong pakinggan at intindihin

Two thumbs up for the 12 senatoriables!

Two thumbs up for the 12 senatoriables of the Team Unity who went last week in their proclamation rally held at the Pampanga Convention Center . The candidates together with President Arroyo raised their hands as the crowd cheered.

Team Unity is composed of Sotto; Oreta; reelectionists Angara and Joker Arroyo and Ralph Recto; Mike Defensor; Sultan Jamalul Kiram III; Bataan Governor Vicente Magsaysay; Cesar MontaƱo; Surigao del Sur Representative Prospero Pichay; Ilocos Sur Governor Luis Singson; and Bukidnon Representative Miguel Zubiri.

One by one, the candidates marched up the stage to the tune of their campaign jingles. Before delivering their speech, each showed their campaign television advertisement.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, together with Vice President Noli De Castro, joined the candidates on stage to endorse the administration senatorial candidates.

Also present were Senator Lito Lapid,Governor Mark Lapid and Representative Juan Miguel Arroyo.

Michael Defensor ended his speech with his line of "ibabahay ko kayo," which was also mentioned by Governor Luis "Chavit" Singson saying he would do the same to the Kapampangans. The crowd kept laughing as he said "Bibigyan ko kayo ng bahay, pero litrato muna,”.
Among the members of the Unity Team, Cesar Montano received the loudest applause. I guess that was the edge of some artists over other senatorial candidates because of the popularity they gained in showbiz industry.

The 12 senatorial candidates of the administration's Team Unity urged all Kapampangans to be united in supporting the lineup of their team and choose bets on the basis of their performances and achievements and not for their skill in attackig the opponents.

Why is Mike Arroyo always linked to corruption?

There’s a joke i received before on my phone but I think it’ s just an old joke by texters, it goes like this…A man enters the confessional booth and says, "Bless me father for I have sinned." The priest, seated behind a screen, asks, "What are your sins?" The man responds, "I'm a liar, a gambler, a drunkard, a womanizer, I take bribes . . ." The priest interrupts, "Erap, is bthat you?" "No," says the man. "This is Mike."

It is not surprising to received jokes about erap I actually received a lot of funny jokes about him about his wrong grammars and being a Mr. Bean attitude. These jokes are not all true but somewhat shows the image of some political individuals like erap and mike.

Ex-President Joseph "Erap" Estrada and Jose Miguel "Mike"
Arroyo, the husband of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, have something in common. I know you already knew what I mean… Yes Corruption allegationhs!!!

The political public is ready to believe things like this because the behaviour of Mike Arroyo in the
past has spread the perception that he is disposed to this kind of thing.

As the First Gentleman, Mike Arroyo's official duties include conducting various
charity projects and hosting a weekly show on the radio and another on television. He
swears he has no plans ever to run for office himself.

However, the responsibility for preventing corruption--and the perception
of it--lies with the people. People have the freedom to believe whether the allegations are true…. Me? Ahmmm not yet decided I should prove first before I judge!!!
MMFF Rules!

I have nothing against the promotion of Filipino movies, nor the strengthening of the Philippine movie industry. The purpose of this article is just to give my opinion regarding the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) during the Christmas break. I heard many reactions on which film will be a blockbuster. Some of the entries are Enteng Kabisote, Kasal Kasali Kasalo, Shake Rattle and Roll, Mano Po and others…
Ofcourse my choice was kasal kasali kasalo, I’m not a fan of Judy ann but I really like the story compared to Enteng Kabisote which won a lot of awards…

I think some of our Filipino actors are the best in the world, and can hold their own against the best of Hollywood. The same goes for Filipino scriptwriters, directors, cinematographers... well, you get the picture. However, I will not be forced into supporting some film festival that promotes Filipino movies by depriving me of the right to choose whether to patronize these movies or not-- which is what the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) does every year when all of Metro Manila's theaters are obliged to show nothing but the MMFF's entries. Anyways what are the criteria of MMFF in choosing the best film? from audience Impact? Best used-effects? How?
If I hear good things about an MMFF movie from people with good taste, I'm going to watch that MMFF movie. In fact, if an MMFF movie has a great-looking poster and and just sounds interesting people will tell others that you should watch this and that,, well in fact we have different tastes in choosing what movie is the best.
Enteng Kabisote is on the first list because of the image of the lead character (Vic Sotto). Children really idolized Vic because of his previous movies that won also the heart of most Filipinos young and old alike.

ONLINE VS PRINT

Online versus Print

The online newspaper is much like any other print newspaper; same text and grainy colored pictures. The layout of the paper is in a sequential order with areas such as headline news, world news, local news, and business in the first half and sections such as sports, arts entertainment, and classifieds in the second half. This is a format that is familiar and conventional in almost every paper you pick up today.
Both the print and online medium shows the same headlines along the front page. The stories which follow from these headlines are identical in both the online and print versions. At first glance these two mediums look to be almost identical. Further analysis, however, proves them to be quite unique. We’ll first compare the advantages and disadvantages that each medium, online versus print, presents.
The print version has many advantages over the online form of the newspaper. One of the largest advantages is the tangibility of the newspaper. Once a reader has obtained a paper, they can carry it around with them and throw it in the trash when they’re done. Most users will have to be sitting in front of a computer with an internet connection to view the paper. This disallows many users from reading the online paper during times when they normally would read a print paper, such as while they’re eating or commuting to work.
Another major advantage of the print media is that it tends to be much more comfortable (visually) to read. The online version must be read from a CRT or LCD display which can be very hard on the eyes. The traditional print media is as comfortable as reading a book or any other printed text.
The disadvantages of the print version of the newspaper mainly lie in the fact that it runs on a once a day life cycle and you have to pay or have a subscription to the service. This was fine many years ago, but with the proliferation of television and the internet, many people expect the news as soon as it breaks and without paying in advance. This is where the online newspaper version truly shines. As soon as a story is completed it can be put online and read by thousands of users. There is no need for the users to wait until the following day for the than stale news. Online newspapers are constantly updated to keep the readers informed on the latest stories, latest stock prices, or any other information the news outlet deems newsworthy. This is the single largest advantage of online newspapers versus their printed counterparts.
Direction-finding is another area where print and online media differ. Print media requires the reader to flip through large, weak pages to find sections, stories, and even continuations of stories from previous pages. Searching for specific information requires the reader to first find the correct section and than to also scan all the stories within that section to find the story which they’re looking for. . The home page displays all of the current headlines (along with a small summary of the story) which are reached simply by clicking on the headline title. Once you select and click on the story you want you will be brought to a page with the entire story or article’s text displayed. When online, there is no need to search the rest of the paper looking for the continuation of the story on page “A3”, for example.
Content for both the print and online version are very similar. The stories themselves are almost always exactly the same, textually. Some stories which are available in the print newspaper are not available directly online, but there are also articles online that aren’t available or printed in the actual newspaper. A disadvantage of the online media is that syndicated articles (including special columnists and comics) are almost never available online due to copyright laws. However, there are certain sections created specifically for and only available to the online community.
Another area where the online paper has advantages over the print paper is the area of audio, video, and archived stories. Obviously print paper can not take advantage of this area, but the online version of the newspaper will regularly have streaming audio and video content related to articles and stories. Print papers also only have stories related to the news the day before, however the online version has a large archive of past stories so that users can search for an article (or crossword) if they happened to miss it (the archive usually contains articles from the past 30 days).
Though they appear to be quite similar and contain much of the same content, they’re actually used by very different users and for very different reasons. Online users demand information as it happens and usually related to specific areas of interest. Print users are satisfied with their news once a day, delivered directly to them. If anything is certain it is that these media types will continue to evolve and to fit the needs and desires of their readers.

FOREIGN ONLINE NEWSPAPERS

The Daily Star
( Bangladesh )
The Daily Star established its place in the media scene of Bangladesh on 14 January, 1991. It started its journey with a sense of challenge and a feeling of humility to serve this nation as a truly independent newspaper. The Daily Star made its debt at a historic time when, with the fall of an autocratic regime, the country was well-set to begin a new era towards establishing a democratic system of government which eluded this country for too long.
For The Daily Star it was a privilege to be part of that changing scene. With that privilege came an enormous responsibility of upholding the duties of a free press. The Daily Star is proud to pursue that policy without relenting for the past ten years. Our long-term responsibility is to strengthen public opinion on how our democratic system should work and how to sustain and nurture democratic norms effectively.
The uniqueness of The Daily Star lies in its non-partisan position, in the freedom it enjoys from any influence of political parties or vested groups. Our strength is in our positioned neutrality in conflicts between good and evil, justice and injustice, right and wrong, regardless of positions held by any group or alliance. That’s why people -- whether in power or in opposition -- respect The Daily Star. The Daily Star advocates rule of law, human rights, gender issues, national interests, press freedom, transparency and accountability of people in administration and in the world of trade and industry on which The Daily Star has never compromised whatever the costs. No political powers can take us for granted and none is given cause to doubt our fairness.
Starting from small beginnings in 1991 with a circulation of a few thousand, The Daily Star has become, over the years, the highest circulated, most respected credible newspaper of Bangladesh . To cater to the widest spectrum of the reading public, our regular 16-page issue contains 3-page Sports round-up, 2 ½ page Business news, 2-page Metro news, one-page Cultural round-up and TV guide, National and International news, plus many more varied, informative and interesting pages on weekly basis including 2-page Star Literature, Focus, Law etc. In addition we have a weekly Special Magazine on Friday (Star Weekend Magazine), a 4-colour tabloid-size week-end publication for the young on Thursday (Rising Stars) and Lifestyle on Tuesday. Presently our internet edition is the most widely browsed Web page by the Bangladeshi nationals living abroad and it is frequently quoted in national and international journals, seminars, research papers as the most trusted and authentic source of news. For The Daily Star and those who work here it is a rare privilege to be cherished by all.

Daily Trust
( NIGERIA )
Ownership The Weekly Trust and Daily Trust are well-focused, market-driven and general interest newspapers. The publications, which made their debut in March 1998 and January 2001 respectively, crystallize the revolutionary vision of an independent Board of Directors. The two newspapers are owned and funded by 19 Shareholders of Media Trust Nigeria, Limited who are mostly young and talented Nigerian professional in various fields.
Debut and outlookAt inception and up to its first anniversary, the Weekly Trust was published in black & white (with masthead in red colour) on off-white newsprint. However, since March 1999 the Weekly Trust has carried a unique identity that was shaped by its full colour prints on excellent white newsprint. Having achieved considerable stride in the design and publication of Weekly Trust, the sister publication, Daily Trust, made its debut in full colour from 15 January, 2001. Thus, the publication’s refreshing editorial contents are spiced with bright colours and exquisite layout that are predicated on the visual principle of B-CH-U-P-S (Balance, Contrast, Harmony, Unity, Proportion and Systemetry) in newspaper design. This is intended to justify the worth of the already subsidized cover price and give value to advertiser/buyers’ money.
Print run and circulationThe Weekly Trust and Daily Trust are now the largest circulating newspapers in Northern Nigeria . The only newspapers whose print runs are in five digits. The weekly sale (Friday through the weekend) for Weekly Trust equals to the combined weekly sale daily newspapers. We are in addition the pioneers in colour production in the North. The Daily Trust, building on the goodwill of the weekly started producing on five digits from inception. The sales copies are distributed in all towns and cities in the North; Lagos, Abeokuta and Ibadan in the South-West; Port Harcourt, Yenagoa, Benin, Calabar in the South South; Onitsha, Owerri, and Enugu in the South East; and in several outlets in London, England.
Editorial contentsAs general interest publications, the editorial contents of Daily Trust and Weekly Trust uphold the libertarian principle. Yet, the publications display profound regard for social responsibility in their news coverage, and editorial comments.Daily Trust Being the first daily newspaper form the Federal Capital territory, Abuja , Daily Trust usually devotes the early pages to news coverage. This is aside special pages for Crime stories, Arts & Entertainment, Information Technology, Health, Inside Politics, Star Feature, Features and the Parliament. Also due to is closeness to the seat of government and multilateral diplomacy, Daily Trust also devotes about four pages to international news.

The recently held University Week celebration was indeed a great success for all of us. The eight colleges competed in various academic competitions which includes poetry interpretation, debate, story-telling, impromptu speech, and Quiz Bees. A job well done for all the participants, all of them are winners. The eight colleges also competed in different categories such as: cultural dance, choir, vocal solo and cheering.

The University Games 2006 started on December 5 with special guests, the SAN MIGUEL All- stars. Students participated in different sports: basketball, volleyball, chess, swimming, badminton, and table tennis. Winners in different events face the final round.

The most awaited and important highlight of the celebration, the search for Mr. and Ms University 2006 was held on December 9 supposedly at the main quadrangle but was moved to the covered court because of the rain. Before arriving at the 12 finalists, the candidates paraded their beauty and tested their personality and wit in the question and answer portion.

The weeklong celebration includes the annual gift-giving event, Bigay Puso 2006 for the poor to be held on December 15 at the covered court.
